David Letterman & the christmas cupcake car
Please Santa, I have been really good. I really, really still want one…
I blogged about the cupcake car a couple of months ago, and I am even more excited to see it in action! Speeding sprinkles, crashing cupcakes, delicious dodgems (yep, I am on an illiteration roll)… and what a gift!

Offensive baby names… who decides?

I read the Sunday Telgraph with interest this morning. It seems that I am not the only Sydneysider with a complete fascination with baby name trends. There is a tele journalist who shares my fetish. Apparently, Ned Kelly and Jesus Christ are unacceptable names according to the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. You can call your kid Metallica, Fully Hektik Sik or God Bless, but don’t even think about giving him the name Ned Kelly - that would be offensive.
Fully Hektik Sik - my mind boggles! If ever there was a child destined to drive a high performance vehicle too fast… And if ever there were parents with nobody to blame but themselves…
Attorney General John Hatzistergos urged parents to use common sense when choosing a name for their child. “A person’s name is their signature for life, their identity,” he said. “A person’s reputation will forever be linked to it and I would remind parents of this special significance when choosing a name for their child.”
Lets pass these words of wisdom on to Blanket Jackson and Sparrow Ritchie/Madden.

When the nines align…

Did you know… worldwide, there were two babies recorded as being born on 09/09/09 at 9.09am?
A baby girl was born in Canberra on Wedenesday morning at 9:09am AEST, on the ninth day of the ninth month, 2009. And across the globe? Another baby was born at 9:09am on 09/09/09, weighing nine pounds, nine ounces at the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens.
In Chinese, “nine, nine,” or “jiu, jiu,” means “for a long time.” It is believed that those born on that date will be guaranteed longevity of life.

Presidential portraits in cupcakes. It’s a cross-stitching technique.
One of our baby gift stylists is really into cross-stitching (Hi Caren!) and I was talking with her about her hobby just the other day at lunch. I commented that she really must have the patience of a saint. I also asked her how she knew where to start. She told me that you fold your fabric in the middle, use that as the starting point and work your way out!
It also seems that that is how you make a presidential portrait in cupcakes.
Check out this amazing time lapse clip…

My best friend’s gift business…

In Episode 65 of Sex in the City, which screened in Australia in 2003, there is a scene where someone called Miranda had a baby shower. They gave her a “diaper cake” (a ‘nappy cake” to you and I!) It looked (for all intents and purposes - or is it “for all intensive purposes” ? - we had this discussion around the lunch table not long ago… but I digress…)
The gift in Sex and the City looked like a wedding cake. It was made from nappies and decorated with baby items. We thought it was a good idea, but thought that we could do it better.
“We” was (and happily, still is) my best friend and I. Marianne and I met at primary school many moons ago, and happily still sit next to each other. There is a wall, and office doors, but there we are, decades later, still side by side.
She is everything I am not, and I am everything she isn’t. We were excited when they ran a cover story about our complimentary relationship last year but perhaps not so excited when we were labelled “the odd couple”. Which of us was Felix? hmmm…
What an exciting journey Marianne & I have come since 2003. We have won may awards for our baby gifts, we have moved premises a total of 4 times (happily - due to expansion!) Our staff numbers have grown, as have our stockists. We have introduced a wholesale range, we have travelled, and now proudly export it to more than 16 countries…
And we still have fun. Best job in the world.
