Baby Bugs…

Why did the butterfly flutter by? Because she saw the dragonfly drink the flagon dry. It was my grandad’s favourite joke, and it still makes me smile.

Our “babycupcakes” dragonfly baby rattles were introduced last month, and are proving to be a huge hit. Their arrival was a source of much excitement on my part - I always love seeing our logo on a product ! (I cannot begin to tell you how many bows I tied the day the printed ribbon arrived way back in 2004!)

The dragonfly rattles make a fantastic addition to any of our baby gifts (pictured above in a Garden of Dreams Baby Bouquet) for an aditional $15. Go on…

And the winner is…

not Sydney.

Our competition to name the baby gift bouquet was won by Simone Wootton of South Australia. We liked her suggestion of Crazy for Colour, probably because the judges, the babycupcakes creative team, are just that - crazy for colour.  Want to buy a crazy for colour baby bouquet? Simone won a $100 baby gift voucher. Her response? “What a lovely surprise!”

A babycupcakes baby…

This photo of baby Sam with a Babycupcakes baby gift, was sent in by a proud aunt.

(He might be my nephew, and I might be biased… but he is very cute at 3/4 of a day old)

six month old evicted from Burger King for not wearing socks - obviously no baby gift from our company!

Keep em covered...!!!!

Keep 'em covered...!!!!

As an upbeat manufacturer of baby gifts, I am always looking for great stories about babies… funnily enough, stories about baby socks do not come along very often. This week I got lucky, and it gives me great pleasure to share this story with you…

A mother and her six month old were politely “asked to leave” a St Louis Burger King this week. It is alleged that the baby was breaching the health code by not wearing footwear, thus contravening the “no shirt, no shoes, no service” policy at the incredibly vigilant fast food establishment.

Burger King’s corporate headquarters has since apologized for the treatment of the family, conceding that staff at Sunset Hills Burger King had taken the policy too far, and advise that the embarassed franchisee is retraining his restaurant team on the proper use of the ‘no shoes’ policy.

I recommend a giggly baby bouquet for all prospective Burger King mothers… baby gifts with six pairs of socks should keep you covered.

Spring is time more babies are sprung

The following article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald by Andrew Bock on June 6, 2009 . (We are looking forward to the spring rush of baby gifts )!

June is a popular month to make love. So are the months of October, November, December and January.

According to birth statistics collated for the first time by Fairfax, the myth that summer loving leads to more babies in spring is only partly true.

We also conceive more in October and November and, as nights get longer and doonas get warmer, in June and July.

Historical birth data collated by the Offices of Births, Deaths and Marriages in NSW and Victoria shows there are about 10 per cent more births in July, August, September and October and increasingly higher numbers around February and March.

The figures point to a more traditional mating season that begins in spring. Birth rates also challenge astrologers, who presume there are equal numbers of people born under each star sign.

Maternity wards are often busier in spring. Pam Tytler, from the birthing suite at the Northern Hospital in Melbourne, said they often hired more staff in September and October. Last year the unit delivered 183 babies in October against 141 in December.

Overall data was collated from total births in 1958, 1983 and 2008 in NSW and Victoria.

The medical director of Family Planning NSW, Dr Christine Read, said the figures were intriguing and raised questions about whether birth times were planned or followed more instinctive or seasonal patterns.

Recent studies in NSW and Victoria concluded that more than 50 per cent of pregnancies, especially the first, were unplanned.

The director of the Centre for Women’s Studies & Gender Research at Monash University, Dr Jane-Maree Maher, said: “We have a fantasy that we are very careful or organised, but our research showed a lot of conceptions are still not planned.”

Dr Read said there were other reasons for people to give birth before December. “Hospital and medical services are less accessible in December and January and people might not want to give their children birthdays around Christmas,” she said.

The co-ordinator of Population and Urban Research at Monash University, Professor Bob Birrell, said access to heating and air-conditioning means “there is no longer any reason to give birth at certain times of the year”.
